The question I get asked most often is how can I get better?

Nov 24, 2021

I held my breath slightly and then told the surgeon I’d been reading research on recovering from surgery and how people get better when they have healing statements said to them while they are under.

Now, this guy is young, tall, dark and handsome, and even speaks perfect English (I do live in France...) so I wasn’t sure how he’d respond to my request for what he might consider woo-woo interventions.

Let’s just say I put him on his heels.  Or rather, he crossed his arms and leaned onto the desk separating us and said he’d enjoy seeing the research.

What I didn’t say is that as a trauma survivor I had years of feeling worthless, that I had felt thrown away, incidental to whatever was happening around me.

Years of healing had shown me both that it wasn’t true that I wasn’t worth it, or that I’d been thrown away. It’s certainly not true for any of us who have had a crummy history.

Even though I know that the parallel life of my history popped up unexpectedly as I considered the surgeon cutting out my hip and, just like that, tossing it into a waste barrel.

That’s what gave me the courage to speak up to at least say SOMETHING.

He was decent about it.

The anesthesiologist, who is Italian by birth was way more heartfelt, intrigued with what I was asking and assuring me he would read what I wrote over the weekend and say the statements. I almost started to bawl with his kindness.

The surgery was highly successful. Yes, I am Bionic (at least in one hip!) and incredibly grateful for the kindness of strangers that surrounded me every day I was there.

Laying in the recovery room I felt grateful for all the years of practice I’d done, practices that have shifted me from living in pain to welcoming the ways to grow, develop and flourish.

The question I get asked most often is how can I get better?

Not to hidden in the conversation is how can this happen as quickly as it can.

The answer comes down to practice.

Years ago, when I was writing my book Attachment-Based Yoga & Meditation for Trauma I lead a number of groups, all based on practices.  I wanted to see what could work and what would work better.

These were all practices that I had created or adapted from the wisdom traditions.  These were the practices I had used when things got tough.

I realized when I was sitting in the hospital bed that if you’re looking for step by step practices I wanted to make them available to you!

So we dug into the archives and found the courses.

This is what I love: providing ways to support you to find simple, practical, everyday solutions to get out of distress and have the life – and love - you want.

It’s what I see happening in the Safely Embodied Learning Community and the courses that I teach.  It’s the world I want to participate in creating together.   And it’s thrilling to see if happening.

Knowing that helps me move forward when I get overwhelmed by the uncertainty of life –or when a surgeon is going to give me a new member of my body!

Here we are....winding down this year. Holidays here. A season dedicated to peace and love, yet often leaving out so many.
